The gap in the market is real. Below a full production line there is a class of operation, a small producer, a co-packer, a lab, a seasonal run, a product launch, that needs labels applied straight and repeatably by a person rather than a line. The usual answers are a hand crank device that applies labels approximately, or a full automatic machine priced for a production line.

What is a semi automatic labeling machine?
A semi automatic labeling machine applies labels with industrial repeatability while a person loads and removes each product. The Altech ALmatic is one: a kit that handles the product, flat or cylindrical, paired with a real Altech labeling head that does the labeling, for volumes too low to justify an automatic line.
The operator sets the pace; the machine sets the placement. That split is what separates a semi automatic labeler from a hand applied label, and it is why the head matters more than the kit.

The 12 to 110 mm diameter range on the ALmatic C is the number that decides most inquiries. At the bottom end that covers vials, test tubes, small cosmetic containers, lip balms and sample bottles. At the top end it covers most wine, spirit, sauce, honey and beverage bottles, jars and tins. If your container is outside that range, this is not your machine and we will say so.
Why does the ALmatic run a real labeling head?
The ALmatic runs a real labeling head because the kit only handles the product; the labeling is done by an Altech head such as the ALstep E, which Altech documents as running either stand alone or with the ALmatic C. That gives industrial placement at hand fed volumes, on a head that can move to a conveyor later.
The ALmatic kits are not standalone appliances. They are the product handling half of a labeling station, and the labeling half is an Altech head:
- The ALstep E does the labeling. Labels to 100 mm (about 3.9 in), 18 m/min (about 59 ft/min), ultra compact body. It is a real industrial labeling head with a real peeler bar and a real label sensor.
- The ALmatic C does the product handling. It rotates the cylinder so the label wraps evenly rather than diagonally.
The result is a bench station applying labels with industrial repeatability at hand fed volumes, on a head that can be moved onto an automatic line later when the volume justifies it. That upgrade path is the argument for buying this rather than a disposable device, and it is rarely the argument made to a small producer.

Who uses a semi automatic labeler?
Semi automatic labelers suit operations where a person feeding the machine is cheaper than a machine feeding itself: small producers and craft manufacturers, co-packers running short runs, seasonal and overflow work, product launches and pilot runs, laboratories and sample preparation, and rework or re-labeling of existing stock.
Small producers and craft manufacturers. Beverage, sauce, honey, cosmetics, supplements, specialty food. Volumes where a person feeding the machine is cheaper than a machine feeding itself.
Co-packers and contract fillers running short runs. A format that runs a few thousand units and then does not come back is a bad fit for a dedicated automatic line and a good fit for a semi automatic station.
Seasonal and overflow work. A second labeling point during a peak that does not justify capital the rest of the year.
Product launches and pilot runs. Before the SKU proves itself, before the volume exists, and before anybody will sign off on an automatic line.
Laboratories, sample prep and clinical work. Vials and small tubes at the bottom of the 12 mm diameter range. Where a regulated line needs recipe control and in line checks rather than a bench station, the Altech ALpharma range is the step up.
Re-labeling and rework. Corrected artwork, a wrong date code, a new retail requirement, or an export label added to existing stock. Rework is an unglamorous but constant use for a semi automatic station.
What does the ALmatic integrate with?
The ALmatic integrates with an Altech labeling head, normally from the ALstep range, plus the peeler bar matched to that head, the standard or transparent-product label sensor, Altech's semi automatic support table or floor stands, and unwind units for larger label rolls. Each is a separate line item on the Altech price list.
The labeling head. ALstep is the natural match. Where the volume grows past what a person can feed, the same thinking moves up to our automatic label applicator range on a conveyor.
Peeler bars. Rigid, adaptive, spring loaded and quick change types, grouped by head family (AE10 to AE19 for the ALstep E and S family). On a hand fed station the peeler bar is what makes the placement repeatable rather than approximate.
Label sensing. The standard label sensor, and CE06, the label tracing sensor for transparent product. A clear label on a clear bottle defeats an ordinary gap sensor at any speed, including hand fed speed.
Support table and stands. Altech's semi automatic support table, plus floor stands and hydraulic raising columns where the station has to suit more than one operator.
Unwind units. Roll unwind units for larger diameter label rolls, so a longer roll means fewer changes rather than a jam.
Is a semi automatic labeling machine right for your volume?
A semi automatic labeling machine is right when labels are applied by hand today, the results are inconsistent, and the volume does not yet justify a conveyor. When the line runs continuously, an automatic head on a conveyor is the better buy; when you apply a few dozen labels a week, neither is.

We will tell you when you do not need this. If you apply forty labels a week, buy label stock that peels well and a jig. A semi automatic labeler earns its money on repeatability at volume, and below a certain volume there is no money to earn. And if an automatic machine is the right answer but the budget is not there yet, refurbished labeling machines are worth a look before a new line.
Frequently asked questions
How many units an hour will an ALmatic do? It is hand fed, so the honest answer is that the operator sets the rate, not the machine. We do not publish a figure for these kits that we cannot source. Tell us your daily volume and your container and we will get the current specification from Altech and tell you whether the numbers work.
Will it label my bottle? If the bottle is between 12 and 110 mm in diameter, the ALmatic C is designed for it. Outside that range, it is not, and no amount of adjustment changes that. For flat products, the ALmatic E is the kit.
Can it apply a front and a back label? Not in the way a two head automatic machine does. A semi automatic station applies one label per operation. Two labels means two operations or a front and back machine.
Can we upgrade later? That is the point of buying an ALmatic with an Altech head rather than a self contained device. The head is a real Altech labeling head, so as volume grows the head can move onto a conveyor with an applicator and a sensor around it. The kit is what gets outgrown, not the whole purchase.
Can it print a date or lot code? Not on its own. It applies a label, it does not print one. Either the code comes on the label from your label printer, or it gets coded onto the pack separately with a thermal inkjet coder.
How much does a semi automatic labeling machine cost? The price is set by the kit (flat or cylinder), the head paired with it, the label sensor, and any stand or unwind unit around it. We quote after seeing the container, the label and the daily volume, because a price given without those is a price for a different machine.
What is the best labeling machine for a small business? The one matched to its container, its label and its volume, with room to grow. For hand fed volumes that is often a semi automatic kit on an industrial head; for a few labels a week it is good label stock and a jig; for a continuous line it is an automatic head on a conveyor.
