There are two different products sharing this name. One prints labels on a desk. The other puts them on your product, at line speed, every time, for years. This page is about the second one.

If you have been researching the labeling machine market you have probably noticed that the results mix desktop label printers, handheld label makers and marketplace listings in with actual production equipment. That is not a small distinction. A machine that produces a label and a machine that applies one to a moving product are different purchases, different price brackets and different suppliers.

Marapack Services specifies, supplies, installs, commissions and services industrial labeling machines for produce, food, beverage and general manufacturing lines, from a base in the Pacific Northwest. We are the Pacific Northwest distributor for Altech labeling systems, importing direct from the factory in Bareggio, Italy, and we service Altech, Label-Aire 3100 applicators and 5100 systems, PackLeader, CTM and Tach-It equipment whether we supplied it or not.

Not sure whether you need a head, a machine or a line? Book an equipment audit and we answer it on your floor, on your product.

What is a labeler machine used for?

A labeler machine applies pressure sensitive labels to products, cases or pallets as they move down a production line, putting each label in the same position on every unit. An industrial labeling machine combines one or more labeling heads with a conveyor, product handling and sensors, so the label lands square at line speed.

That is the whole job, and it is a different job from printing. A label printer produces labels. A labeling machine takes a roll of labels, preprinted or printed in the head, peels each one off its backing web and puts it on a product that is moving, turning or held in place.

Where the confusion costs money is in the search results. A desktop unit that makes labels and a line machine that applies them both answer to "labeling machine", and they differ by more than an order of magnitude in price, duty and service needs.

Do you need a labeling head, a labeling machine, or a labeling line?

The first real decision in a labeling project is this one: a labeling head mounted on the conveyor you already have, a complete labeling machine with its own conveyor and frame, or a labeling line of several stations. The answer changes the budget by an order of magnitude, so it comes before any model number.

Almost every labeling project starts in the wrong place, with a machine model. It should start here.

A labeling head on your existing conveyor

You already have a conveyor section with space, a stable product path and enough gap between products. You buy the head, a peeler bar, sensors, a stand and a bracket, and it mounts over what you have.

Cheapest, fastest to install, and the right answer more often than the equipment industry admits. The limit is that everything upstream is still your problem: if the product arrives crooked, the head cannot fix it. The heads themselves, and the application methods they use, are covered on our industrial label applicators hub.

A complete labeling machine

Head, conveyor, frame, product handling and guarding, built as one machine and delivered as one machine. The base is sized for the number of heads and whether they work on the same face or on opposite faces, and the conveyor type is chosen for the product: slat, roller, belt or intermittent motion.

This is the class most people mean by "labeling machine", and it is what the trade calls an inline labeling machine when it sits in the run of the line. It is the right answer when the product needs to be positioned, held or turned before the label goes on, which is almost always true for anything round, tall, light or deformable. The linear machines in the Altech ALline range are built this way.

A labeling line

Several stations working together: infeed accumulation, gapping or orienting, one or more labeling stations, coding, inspection, outfeed. Built around a conveyor spine rather than around a head.

This is where the specification work actually earns its money, because the failure mode of a line is rarely the labeler. It is the handoff between two stations.

Which type of labeling machine fits where the label goes?

The label position decides the automatic labeling machine. A wrap on a round container needs a wrap around machine, two opposite faces need a front and back machine, a lid and a base need a top and bottom machine, variable data needs print and apply, and a finished load needs a pallet labeler.

This is the useful way to navigate the category, because the label position drives the machine and the machine drives the handling around it.

Wrap around

A full or partial wrap on a round or oval container. Bottles, jars, cans, tubes, tubs, cartridges. The container has to be spun under the label, which is a product handling problem before it is a labeling one. Machines, handling units and the questions to ask are on the wrap around labeling machines page.

Front and back

Two labels on two opposite faces of the same container, in one pass, in register with each other. Two heads on a shared base, with the container held square between them. See our front and back labelers for the layouts.

Top and bottom

A lid and a base, or a top panel and an underside, applied together. Clamshells, trays, thermoformed packs, flat products. Produce and fresh food lines ask for this format often, and it is also the one where a clear label on a clear pack defeats a standard sensor. The machines are on our top and bottom labeling machines page.

Print and apply

Anything where the label content changes per unit: a date, a lot code, a batch, a weight, a GTIN plus lot combination, an SSCC. A thermal transfer print engine sits inside the head and prints the label at the moment of application. The heads, engines and data connections are on the print and apply systems hub.

Pallet labeling

The finished load, labeled on one or more faces, with a unique SSCC per pallet. Either a fixed pallet labeling station or a robotic arm where the load is stationary and several faces are needed. Both routes are compared on our automatic pallet labelers page.

Semi automatic and benchtop

Hand fed, low volume, short run, seasonal. A wrap around kit for cylinders, a flat product kit, a benchtop applicator. Not a compromise if the volume genuinely is not there, and a good bridge while an automatic line is being specified. The Altech ALmatic semi automatic kits cover this class.

Which labeling machines do we build lines from?

We build labeling machines and lines from the Altech range, imported direct from Bareggio, Italy: ALstep and ALritma labeling heads, ALcode print and apply heads, ALline linear machine bases, ALbelt conveyors, and the product handling, sensing and camera options that go around them. Every item is an Altech line item, quoted and fitted with the machine.

Labeling heads

A naming note that saves a phone call later: the 2026 price list uses ALritma S / L / X S / X M, while factory serial records use ALritma M / MT / M SX / M DX / XS, where SX is left hand and DX is right hand. Both appear on real paperwork. Quote the serial number when ordering parts.

Each family has its own model page with the full specification: ALstep, ALritma, ALritma X and ALmatic.

Print and apply heads

Print engines integrate as modules: 200, 300 and 600 dpi thermal transfer units in two engine families, plus a compact engine module, each with its own integration assembly. The integration assembly is a commonly missed line item on a print and apply quote written by somebody who has not built one.

Complete linear machines

The ALline range is a set of machine bases rather than one machine: a compact base, a one head base, and a base carrying two opposing heads for front and back work. Onto that you choose a conveyor.

This is line level business rather than a component sale: the machine arrives as a machine, with the handling already designed around the product.

Conveyors

The single belt and two section conveyors are detailed on the ALbelt conveyor labeling system page.

Product handling, which is where lines actually fail

Spacers and gapping devices including pneumatic gates, rubber wheel spacers, side belt spacers, timing screws and twin roller gapping. Orienting units including side belt aligners, double chain systems for elliptical containers, twin grippers for oval containers and double timing screw orienting and gapping. Wrap around units including hand wheel, vacuum, four axis, three roller and flag label brush kits. Stabilizing belts. Infeed and outfeed rotary accumulation tables, including pharmaceutical vial versions.

For cards, inserts and coupons fed into a line, we quote, supply and commission Altech friction feeders, the FF25 (250 mm) and the FF40 (400 mm).

If your product arrives in the wrong place, no labeling machine will save you. This is the half of the quote that gets cut and the half that causes the second visit.

Sensing, camera and control options

Label presence check, laser scanner, mark reader, smart camera for over print reading, smart camera for label presence, full camera vision, product ejector, acoustic alarm and compressed air presence monitoring. Plus a label tracing sensor built specifically for transparent product, because a clear label on a clear pack is a common sensing failure on fresh produce lines.

Automatic or semi automatic labeling machine?

Choose an automatic labeling machine when the line runs every day at a steady rate and the label position has to repeat without an operator. Choose a semi automatic labeling machine when volume is low, runs are short or seasonal, or when you need labels on product now while an automatic line is being specified.

The question to answer honestly is how many units a shift actually needs labeled, and how many days a year. A seasonal pack that runs a few weeks a year can be well served by a hand fed kit and a trained operator. A line running two shifts all year cannot.

We will tell you when the right answer is the smaller machine.

Which industries is this equipment built for?

This labeling equipment is built for fresh produce and fruit packing, food processing, beverage and wine, cannabis and extracts, pharmaceutical and nutraceutical products, and general manufacturing and distribution. The Altech range includes machines designed for each, from wet produce sheds to validated pharmaceutical lines, so the format and handling are chosen by product.

Fresh produce and fruit packing. Cherry, berry, apple, pear and fresh cut lines. Wet product, condensation, dust, seasonal peaks and PTI case labeling. Produce lines are the core of our installed base.

Food processing. Trays, tubs, pouches, cases and pallets, usually with date and lot coding alongside the label. The coding side is covered on our coding and marking equipment hub.

Beverage, wine and spirits. Wrap, front and back, neck and back label registration, and a lot of glass that has to be handled without marking.

Cannabis and extracts. Small containers, high SKU count, frequent format changes and compliance labeling that changes faster than the equipment does.

Pharmaceutical and nutraceutical. Vials, ampoules, bottles and cartons, with validated control, recipe management and inspection. The equipment for this is the Altech ALpharma range, with a pharmaceutical validation documentation package available as an ordered line item.

General manufacturing and distribution. Cases, cartons, totes and pallets, mostly print and apply.

How much does a labeling machine cost?

A labeling machine costs what its head class, number of heads, conveyor, product handling, application method, sensing and environment add up to, and those seven drivers move the price by an order of magnitude. There is no useful list price for this category; we quote after walking the line, itemized.

Any site that gives you one number for "a labeling machine" is selling a different product than the one you need.

What actually drives the number:

  1. Head class. A preprinted label head and a print and apply head with an integrated print engine are different machines.
  2. Number of heads. One label, two labels, top and bottom, front and back.
  3. Conveyor and frame. A head on your existing conveyor versus a complete machine versus a line.
  4. Product handling. Spacing, orienting and stabilizing devices. This is the variable that surprises people.
  5. Applicator method. A wipe on head and a three axis servo applicator are at opposite ends of the range.
  6. Cameras and sensors. Adding an over print camera or camera vision is an attachment, not a rebuild, but it is a real line item.
  7. Environment. Wet areas, stainless, harsh environment kits, hazardous area.

We quote against the line walk, itemized, so you can see which of those seven is driving the number and decide whether you want it. Get the line walked before anyone quotes you a machine; the audit booking is at the foot of this page.

If budget is the constraint, two other routes are worth a look before a new machine: refurbished labeling machines, and a repair or retrofit of the machine you already own.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a labeling machine and a label applicator? An applicator is the head and the mechanism that applies the label. A labeling machine is a complete machine including the conveyor, frame and product handling. You can buy either, and which is right depends on whether you already have a stable product path with space over it.

What is the difference between a labeling machine and a label printer? A label printer produces a label. A labeling machine applies one to a product. A print and apply system does both in one head, which is a third thing again and the right answer whenever the label content changes per unit.

Can a labeling machine handle more than one product size? Yes, and this is worth specifying properly up front. Multi format applicators, stored label format recipes and quick change peeler bars all exist for this. Retrofitting format flexibility later costs more than specifying it now.

How long does installation take? A head onto an existing conveyor is typically a short on site job. A complete machine or a line is scheduled work that includes commissioning on your product at your speed with your operators. The variable that moves the schedule is almost never the machine; it is site preparation: power, air, space and product presentation.

Do you supply the labels? No. We work alongside regional pressure sensitive label converters and coordinate the specification so the stock, adhesive, core size and roll diameter match the machine. A roll your converter can make and your machine cannot take is a common and avoidable problem.

Do you supply label design software? We specify and configure the label design and the data connection as part of a print and apply system rather than leaving it as your problem after delivery.

Can you service a labeling machine you did not sell us? Yes. Altech, Label-Aire 3100 applicators and 5100 systems, PackLeader, CTM and Tach-It are all in our service scope, and mixed floors are normal. Our field service for labeling equipment covers repair, commissioning and parts.

Do you sell used or refurbished machines? Sometimes, when we have them. We also arrange refurbishment of print engines and sensors at a fixed price, which is often the cheaper answer to what looks like a machine replacement.

Is a labeling machine worth it on a small line? It depends on labor, not on the size of the line. If people are hand applying labels for hours a shift, or a customer is rejecting crooked labels, the machine is usually worth pricing. If labeling takes one person twenty minutes a day, a semi automatic unit or a label dispenser is the honest answer.

Start with the line, not the machine

We walk the line, measure speed, gap, product, surface, space, power and air, and tell you what it takes. It is the step that prevents the wrong machine, and it frequently ends with us telling you the answer is a sensor, a spacer or a service call rather than a purchase. Call 253-709-5566 or request an equipment audit online.

Walk the line with us before pack season

We look at your labeling and coding stations on site, find the weak points, and tell you what to fix, rebuild or replace. Wherever you are in the US, tell us your state and we will route you to the right people.
