We are not neutral and you should know why before you read any further. Marapack Services is the Pacific Northwest distributor for Altech labeling systems. We also service Label-Aire and CTM labeling systems for a living, along with PackLeader and Tach-It machines, which is why we can write this page at all.
That combination is the only reason this comparison is worth reading. A manufacturer comparing itself to two competitors is marketing. A service company that opens all three, orders parts for them and gets called when they stop is at least describing something it has seen.
Marapack Services is an independent company, not Altech S.r.l. and not ALTech US. We import Altech equipment direct from the factory in Bareggio, Italy. Label-Aire, CTM, PackLeader and Tach-It are brands we service. We stock parts for PackLeader and Tach-It and some Label-Aire parts, and we do not stock CTM parts. We do not represent any of those four brands and this page does not speak for them.
What we will and will not tell you here
Worth stating plainly, because it explains the shape of the rest of this page.
We will tell you how the three brands behave in the field as we see them, what actually decides between applicator brands, and what the ownership experience differs on. We will also tell you the Altech specifications, because we hold the current distributor price list and can stand behind them.
We will not publish a specification table for Label-Aire or CTM machines. We do not hold their catalogs, their ranges change, and a comparison table built from whatever a competitor's website said on the day it was written is the kind of document that gets quoted back at a supplier six months later. If you want current Label-Aire or CTM specifications, get them from Label-Aire or CTM. We would rather be short one table than publish numbers we cannot stand behind.
That constraint is worth applying to any brand comparison you read, including the ones written by the manufacturers. And if you would rather skip the reading and have somebody look at the line itself, request a line walk and we will start from your label, your product and your speed rather than from a brand.
What actually decides between Altech, Label-Aire and CTM labeling systems?
Five things decide it, and the badge is rarely one of them: whether the application method suits your label and surface, who supports the machine and from how far away, how fast wear parts arrive, how wide the range behind the machine is, and whether the person quoting it has stood on your line.
Buyers ask about brands. What determines whether the installation works is almost never the brand name on the frame.
1. Is the machine right for the label and the surface
Label length sets the head. Surface and product presentation set the application method: wipe, tamp, tamp blow, air blow, rotary arm, large format, three axis. Every serious manufacturer makes good machines and every one of them makes machines that are wrong for a given line. Choosing the wrong application method is not a brand problem and changing brand will not fix it. The trade offs between methods are laid out across our automatic label applicator range, method by method.
2. Who supports it, and how far away are they
This is the one that decides whether you are happy in year three, and it is the one that rarely gets asked at quote stage.
When a labeling head fails in the second week of a pack run, the questions are: who picks up the phone, how far away are they, do they have the part, and have they seen this machine before. A brand with a national reputation and no local presence performs worse in that moment than a less famous brand with somebody thirty miles away who stocks the wear parts.
3. Parts availability and lead time
Every applicator on the market is a machine with wear parts: peeler bars, sensors, belts, bearings, peel plates, drives. What varies is how quickly you can get one and how much diagnosis is required before somebody knows which one you need.
For Altech, we hold the current parts list, and parts are quoted against your machine serial number and its original job number, with a per machine three dimensional model for identification. Parts are manufactured in Italy, so bespoke items take longer to arrive than stock items. That is an argument for keeping your own wear parts on the shelf before the season starts, not an argument against the brand. The ordering process for Altech replacement parts has its own page.
For Label-Aire we stock some parts and source the rest through the Label-Aire distributor channel. For PackLeader and Tach-It we stock parts. For CTM we service the machines and we do not stock CTM parts.
4. How wide the range is behind the machine you are buying
This matters more than it sounds, because lines grow. If your applicator supplier can also supply the conveyor, the product handling, the spacer, the print engine integration, the pallet labeler and the inspection camera, then your line stays one system with one support relationship. If they cannot, you end up integrating three vendors and owning the integration yourself.
The Altech range runs from a compact semi automatic kit through labeling heads, print and apply, conveyors, complete linear machines, pallet labeling including a robotic arm, friction feeders, product handling, vision and inspection, and a pharmaceutical control system with a validation documentation package available as an ordered line item. The whole labeling machine range sits behind the applicator. Whether you need that breadth today is a fair question. Whether you will need some of it in five years is usually a shorter conversation.
5. Whether the person quoting it has stood on your line
The specification is made or lost in the walk down the line: surface, speed, gap consistency, label size, where the label has to go, environment, and what happens at changeover. A quote written from a form is a quote written from assumptions.
How do Altech, Label-Aire and CTM compare, brand by brand?
We can compare them only on what we can stand behind. For Altech, that is the specifications on the distributor price list we hold. For Label-Aire and CTM labeling systems, it is our service relationship: we work on both, we stock some Label-Aire parts and no CTM parts, and we publish no specifications for either.
Altech
The range we sell, and the reason is breadth plus the local support position rather than any single machine being magic.
What we can state with the price list in front of us: labeling heads from a compact 100 mm format head through to 300 mm formats, the ALritma X S head with an integrated 250 mm rewinder, semi automatic kits, print and apply with integrated print engines, pallet labeling including a four axis articulated arm, conveyors and complete linear machines, applicators across the common application methods, product handling, friction feeders, vision and inspection cameras, and a control system for pharmaceutical work with its validation documentation package as an ordered line item.
There is a naming quirk worth knowing before you order parts: the 2026 price list uses ALritma S / L / X S / X M, while the factory serial records use ALritma M / MT / M SX / M DX / XS, where SX means left hand and DX means right hand. Both conventions appear in live paperwork on the same machine. Quote the serial number and the naming resolves itself. Model detail for the ALritma S and L heads is on their own page.
Label-Aire
A long established name in label applicators, and one we see on the lines we service. We service Label-Aire machines, including the 3100 applicators and 5100 systems, and we stock some Label-Aire parts, sourcing the rest through the Label-Aire distributor channel.
What we will say about them is what we see: they are serviceable, and the practical question for an owner is usually parts and support rather than the machine.
What we will not do is publish a specification comparison against machines whose current catalog we do not hold.
CTM
Also a brand we work on. If you are running one of the CTM labeling systems, including the model numbers people search for such as the 360a, tell us the model and the serial number and we will tell you what we can do rather than guess on a web page.
The same rule applies: we service CTM machines, we do not stock CTM parts, and we do not publish CTM specifications.
And the two that belong in the same conversation
PackLeader, which we also service and stock parts for, and Tach-It, now a division of Bedford Industries, which we service and stock parts for. At the bottom of the range, where an Altech machine is more machine than the job needs, a simpler applicator or a manual dispenser can be the honest answer, and we will say so.
What should you do if you already own a Label-Aire or CTM machine?
Keep it running and change the support if the support is the problem. We service Label-Aire and CTM labeling systems whether we sold them or not. Before replacing any applicator, get it assessed, because a machine that misbehaves is often telling you about the product presentation, the sensor or the peeler bar.

You do not have to replace a machine to change who supports it. We service Altech equipment, Label-Aire 3100 applicators and 5100 systems, PackLeader, CTM and Tach-It machines, whether we sold them or not. Before you replace, get the machine assessed. Machines we are asked to replace sometimes turn out to need a peeler bar, a sensor built for the stock you actually run, a spacer to fix the gap, or a print engine refurbishment we arrange. Replacing a machine because it is misbehaving, without diagnosing why, is how a plant ends up with a new machine misbehaving in the same way, because the cause was the product presentation.
When replacement genuinely is the answer, it is usually one of these: parts are no longer available, the label size or line speed has outgrown the head, the product changed shape, or the rework and downtime cost per season now exceeds the capital. That is also the point to look at refurbished labeling machines alongside new ones.
What should you ask any applicator vendor, including us?
Ask every vendor the same eight questions, including us: whether they have walked your line, why they chose the application method, who comes when it breaks, which wear parts to stock, what the quote leaves out, whether they support the rest of the line, whether they service other brands, and what happens when your product changes.
Print this list and use it on all of them.
- Have you walked my line? If not, the quote is a guess.
- What application method are you proposing and why that one? If the answer is not about my surface, my product presentation and my label size, they have not thought about it.
- What happens when it breaks in week two of my season? Who comes, from where, how fast, and with what on the van.
- What wear parts should I stock, and what are their lead times? A vendor who cannot answer this has not supported many machines.
- What is not included? Peeler bar type, sensors for my actual label stock, product handling, the stand, the conveyor, integration. This is where quotes diverge and where installations underperform.
- Can you support the rest of my line, or just this machine?
- Can you service the machines I already have from other brands?
- What happens if my product or my label changes? Format storage, changeover time, whether the head still suits it.
Frequently asked questions
Which is better, Altech, Label-Aire or CTM labeling systems? Not a question with an answer at brand level, and anyone who gives you one at brand level is selling. What decides an installation is whether the application method suits your surface and presentation, whether the head suits your label size and speed, and who supports it locally. We sell Altech and we service all three, which is the most honest thing we can tell you.
Is Label-Aire or CTM the better choice? The same answer applies to label aire vs CTM as to any pair of brands: the application method, the head, and the support behind it decide the outcome. We service both and publish specifications for neither, so ask each manufacturer for current specifications and ask us who supports the machine after it is installed.
Do you service Label-Aire applicators? Yes, including the 3100 applicators and 5100 systems. We stock some Label-Aire parts and source the rest through the Label-Aire distributor channel.
Do you service CTM labeling systems? Yes. We do not stock CTM parts, so send the model and serial number and we will tell you what the machine needs.
Can you supply parts for a machine you did not sell? For Altech, PackLeader and Tach-It we stock parts. For Label-Aire we stock some parts and source the rest through the Label-Aire distributor channel. We do not stock CTM parts; CTM machines we service.
We have a mixed floor. Is that a problem? It is normal. One service relationship across Altech, Label-Aire, CTM, PackLeader and Tach-It machines is simpler to run than three or four separate ones.
Why will you not publish a spec comparison? Because we hold the Altech distributor price list and we do not hold theirs. Publishing competitor specifications we cannot verify would make this page look more complete and make it less trustworthy, and it would breach our own rule about never publishing a specification we cannot stand behind.
Are you saying Altech is better? We are saying it is the range we chose to represent, that it is broad, and that we can support it with the Altech parts we stock. Those are three real reasons and none of them is "the other machines are bad", because they are not.
What if I am outside the Pacific Northwest? Ask anyway. Parts can ship, and where a site genuinely needs local hands we will tell you plainly rather than take a job we cannot support.
